2. Do you just use Notes for email?

Do you know of a world-class platform to build custom applications that will not cost you anything to buy? If you use Notes and Domino, then you already have one! Domino is way more than just email and calendaring, it is a complete application development (via Domino Designer) and hosting platform for both Notes client and web applications. If your organization is just using Notes and Domino for email, then consider building a few applications to take advantage of the investment you already have made. You don't even have to develop the application, check out the free templates at OpenNTF.org and see if they have something that will solve a need for your organization. Check out DominoTeam HelpDesk, the Domino Wiki, or the Job Database, just to list a few examples of the free templates at OpenNTF. If you do build a custom application, start off with a simple project to build your skills and get feedback from your users and executives.

Don't have development skills? TLCC's Notes Domino 8 Certified Application Developer package has the three courses you need to jump-start your development skills. This package is on sale for only $1,599.

To learn more about how to jump start your development skills go to:

3. Exam Deadline to Upgrade Certifications to Notes Domino 7 has been postponed

All you procrastinators have gotten another extension! The exam deadline for upgrading Notes and Domino 6 certifications to Notes Domino 7 that was previously scheduled for April 30th has been postponed indefinitely. This affects anyone certified at the Notes Domino 6 or 6.5 level, who wants to take advantage of the one exam upgrade to Notes Domino 7. Once you accomplish that certification level, then you can take one exam to upgrade to the Notes Domino 8 level.

The following exams are still available:

Test 701: IBM Lotus Notes Domino 7 Application Development Update
Test 702: IBM Lotus Notes Domino 7 System Administration Update

TLCC strongly suggests that anyone who is certified for Notes Domino 6 as either an Application Developer or a Systems Administrator get certified on Notes Domino 7 by taking the appropriate update exam. The upgrade path is significantly easier than taking the three exams required to get certified on Notes Domino 7 or Notes Domino 8. Note that there is no upgrade path for Notes Domino 6 certifications to jump to Notes Domino 8. Both the update exam for Notes Domino 7 and Notes Domino 8 will be required to achieve certification in Notes Domino 8.

4. IBM Article: Access your Domino mail on your iPhone

iPhone users can access their mail, calendar and contacts using the new ultra-lite mode of iNotes. This feature was added in both Domino 8.0.2 and 8.5. A new IBM DeveloperWorks article covers how to set up and use iNotes to allow for iPhone access, including how to set up the redirector application to provide a special login screen for iPhone users.

TLCC's Notes Domino 8.5 System Administration Update course covers how to set up the new ultra-lite mode to enable iPhone access. The TLCC Notes 8 user courses cover how to use an iPhone to access Domino mail, calendar and contacts.

5. Recycle and your Java Domino Agents

Bob Balaban has written a blog post on why and when you should use the recycle method in your Java Domino agents. This won't help clean the environment, but may prevent your agent from slowing down the server or even preventing a crash. Bob has promised a follow-on blog entry to go into more details in the next few days. All Java programmers who are writing Java Domino agents should review this blog entry and be aware of the need for recycling.

And if you are a LotusScript programmer and wondering why you don't need to recycle object variables, read Bob's post on garbage collection and LotusScript. All LotusScript programmers should read the performance tip at the end of the blog entry!
