Using the Domino Web Administrator Click here to see all the Developer/Admin Tips

Date tip published:01/10/2005
Description:If administrators are away from their desks or do not run Windows on their client computers, they can still perform most administration tasks from the Web Administrator database (webadmin.nsf). This application, written with XML, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Java applets, functions as a web-based version of the Domino Administrator client. Some administrators may have already encountered the Web Administrator in R5, which wasn't very useful. The Web Administrator has been greatly improved for Notes/Domino 6, and is now a very useful tool for remotely administering servers.

The Domino Web Administrator

If administrators are away from their desks or do not run Windows on their client computers, they can still perform most administration tasks from the Web Administrator database (webadmin.nsf).

Granting Access to the Web Administrator

Like any other database, access to webadmin.nsf is controlled by the database's Access Control List.

The names in the Administrators and Full Access Administrators fields in the Server document are automatically added to the ACL of the Web Administrator database with Manager access and all the roles. If others should have access, their name can be added to the ACL manually, and the appropriate roles granted.

A sample ACL for a Web Administrator database is shown below:

The various roles grant access to the different tabs of the Web Administrator database.

For instance, someone without the [People&Groups] role would not be able to see the
People & Groups tab.

Someone without the [ServerAnalysis] role would be unable to see the
Server | Analysis tab.

Procedure: Using the Web Administrator

The Web Administrator database is created automatically the first time the HTTP task is started on a server.

Note
CA Process Needed to Register Users

As of Domino Release 6, new users can be registered through the Web Administrator client. However, in order to use this function, the appropriate certifier ID must have been configured to run under the server-based Certificate Authority process.

Tip
Use Microsoft Internet Explorer

Officially, Netscape is a supported browser for the Web Administrator. However, testing shows that the application functions best in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later.

Follow these steps to use the Web Administrator:

  1. Open a web browser.

  2. Enter the URL for the Web Administrator database on the appropriate server and press Enter. The URL is http://servername/webadmin.nsf. For example, http://rock.adventure.com/webadmin.nsf.

  3. Log in with the appropriate Internet username and password.

  4. The opening page appears, giving an overview of the server. An example is shown below. This page can be re-opened at any time by clicking on the first icon in the bookmark bar, highlighted below.

  5. Click the second icon in the bookmark bar, highlighted below, to open the Domain bookmark window.

  6. Click the third icon in the bookmark bar to access your mail.

  7. Click the desired function tab to use the commands and features on that tab. The screenshot below shows an example of the Server | Status tab.

  8. The Live Console feature is the equivalent of the Remote Console built in to the Domino Administrator client. Administrators can use the Live Console to view an ongoing live display of the messages being displayed on the server console. In order to use the Live Console, the server must have been started with the Domino Controller. Also, the browser must have the Java 1.3 plugin or higher installed. The Java plugin can be downloaded from Sun's Java site.

  9. If the server is not running under the Domino Controller, the Quick Console can be used as an alternative. Administrators can use the Quick Console to issue commands and view the results of those commands; however, unlike the Live Console, they will not see a live ongoing display of all the server console messages. The screenshot below shows an example of using the Quick Console to issue the show tasks command.

  10. When done using the Web Administrator, click the [Logout] button to clear the administrator's login and close the browser window.
