Keep Multiple Versions of the Notes client on One Computer

Below are the steps copied directly from Domino 8 Administrator Help to keep an existing installation of the Notes client on your system and install Notes 8. These steps will also work for the Domino Designer and Domino Administrator clients. There are some caveats. Certain functions like COM/OLE, clicking on a mailto link in a browser, or using a Notes:/// url will use the last installed Notes version. Also, each version of Notes will have its own data directory. Local databases can not be shared, but, you can replicate with a Domino server to keep the local databases in sync.

If you do not follow these steps, than the Notes installation program will install over the existing Notes on that computer.

The steps below are from the Domino 8.0.2 Administrator Help:

Keeping a pre-Notes 8 version on Windows

On Microsoft® Windows®, you can make a copy of your IBM® Lotus® Notes® 6.5.x or 7.x installation and then install Lotus Notes 8.

These instructions apply to single user installation only.

You must have local administrator privileges to complete this procedure.

1. Shut down the Notes client and all Notes-related tools, utilities and add-ins running on your computer.

2. Make a backup copy of your NOTES.ID and NOTES.INI file.

3. Rename the Notes 6.5.x or 7.x install directory. For example, rename the directory notes7.

4. Rename the entire Notes registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Lotus\Notes. For example, rename it HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Lotus\Notes7.

5. Rename the entire Installer registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lotus\Notes\Installer. For example, rename it HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lotus\Notes\Installer7.

6. Create a new desktop shortcut to run the Notes 6.5.x or 7.x version. Create a copy of your existing Notes desktop shortcut icon, then right click on it, click Properties and change the following settings:

      1. Change the Shortcut tab - Target value to \notes7x\notes.exe =\notes\notes.ini.
      2. Change the Start in value to \notes7x.
      3. Change the Title (General tab) to Notes 7.
      4. Click OK to close the properties dialog.

7. Install Lotus Notes 8.

8. When installation is complete, rename the 6.5.x or 7.x install directory back to its original name.
