Changes to Spell Check in Notes 8.5.1

This tip is taken from a lesson in TLCC's Notes 8 user courses. These courses are a great way to show your users all the new features in Notes 8.5. You can easily deploy the courses to all your users by simply placing them on your Domino server. The courses can be taken with a Notes client or a web browser. The content in the courses can be easily customized to fit your organization's needs. An integrated discussion database is used to allow the student to ask questions of an instructor/support person. A list of topics in the course can be deployed in the Notes 8 sidebar to allow for a quick reference. Try out TLCC's Notes 8 user course for yourself at no charge!

Notes 8.5.1 includes a new spell check engine that is the same one that is used in Symphony. Additionally, there are three new Spell Check Preference options available in Notes 8.5.1. The new options are found under the 'Instant Corrections' section on the Spell Check page in the Preferences dialog shown below.

When enabled, these new options allow Notes to automatically correct three common typing errors:
    • Correct common typing errors - Typical spelling errors such as "teh" instead of "the" are automatically corrected as you type. A fixed replacement table is used to correct the misspellings, so that when you type a letter combination that has a match in the replacement table, the text is replaced with the replacement text from the table. In the 8.5.1 release of Notes, the replacement table is fixed and cannot be edited by the user or administrator.
    • Capitalize first letter of every sentence - If you start a sentence with a lowercase letter, this option allows Notes to capitalizes the first letter of every sentence.
    • Correct TWo INitial CApitals - If you type two uppercase letters at the beginning of a word, such as "CApital", the second uppercase letter will be automatically replaced with a lowercase letter.
Each of the above options can be selected individually by checking the respective checkbox in the Preferences dialog shown above.

Changing Back to the Legacy Spell Checker

    NOTE: The new spell check engine is enabled by default in Notes 8.5.1, however it is possible to revert back to the pre-8.5.1 version of the Spell Check engine if desired.

    Add the following line to the NOTES.INI file to revert back to the legacy version of Spell Check:

    SPELL_FORCE_LEGACY=1
