User Training Right in the Notes 8 Sidebar!
One complaint about traditional training is that the students often forget what they learned as soon as they leave the classroom. TLCC's Notes 8 and Sametime user courses have an option to deploy the list of topics right in the Notes 8 sidebar. This lets your users easily see the topics from the course and quickly navigate to a topic they might want to learn more about. This allows for dynamic training as needed. A user can click on any lesson in the Notes 8 sidebar and then that lesson will open up in a new tab in the Notes client.

The list of topics in the Notes 8 sidebar is a widget (a new feature in Notes 8.0.1.) This widget is a customized Notes view which has been designed specifically for use in the Notes 8 sidebar. This special TLCC course view takes five minutes to setup as a Widget and then publish that Widget to the Widget catalog for your organization. A Desktop Settings policy is used to deploy the widget across your organization. The users will see the widget in their sidebar the next time they start the Notes 8 client. This new feature requires the Notes 8.0.1 or higher Standard client.
You can use this approach and create a widget from any Notes element such as a view, page, or document in your own applications. You don't even have to modify the design of the application to use them. However, as in the case of TLCC's user courses, having a specially prepared Notes view is best. This dedicated design element (view or form) is designed and formatted to fit nicely in the smaller constraints of the Notes sidebar. The view is also modified so a document opens when the user single clicks-on a document. The onSelect event of the view is used to control the opening of the document when the user single-clicks on a topic. The LotusScript code in this event opens the correct document in the Notes client using a frameset. The use of a frameset allows subsequent documents to be opened in the same tab in the Notes client instead of having a tab for each document the user clicked on.
