DB2 for Domino 8 Administrators and Developers
Units: 10
Duration: 2 classroom equivalent days
Discussion Access: One Year

Summary Description

Learn how to use DB2 as the back-end Domino database store. This course is designed for someone who has no knowledge of DB2 and includes the basics of administering DB2 and DB2 security. You will learn how to install DB2, set configuration parameters for DB2 instances and databases and how to back up and recover DB2 databases. Next, learn how Domino works with DB2 and how to install and configure a Domino 8 server to store databases on a DB2 server. Finally, learn how to create new types of applications that integrate Domino with DB2 by using DB2 Access Views and Query Views and allow Domino applications access to other DB2 databases (federated data.) This course is a great foundation to start using DB2 with Domino 8.

Audience and Prerequisites

Experienced Domino administrators and developers who want to learn how to use the new DB2 feature.

System Requirements
Required before installing the course:
  • Notes 8 client, including Domino Administrator and Domino Designer
  • At least one computer on which the DB2 and Domino 8 test servers can be installed. The computer on which DB2 is installed must have XP Professional (XP Home Edition will not work), Windows 2000 or Windows 2003. NOTE: The Domino 8 server cannot be installed on Windows Vista. If running Windows Vista, the course includes instructions on how to create a virtual machine using VMware and the Windows 2003 trial software.
  • Access to the Internet for instructor support
Installed during the course:
  • DB2 Version 9.1 or DB2 Version 9.5 (available as a trial version)
  • Domino 8 server (available as a trial version)
  • DB2 Access Server (required to perform activities in Module 4; no trial available)

Course Modules

Module 1 - Installing DB2
The first task in enabling the NSFDB2 feature is installing and configuring a DB2 server. The lessons in this module provide an overview of DB2, and instructions on how to install and configure the DB2 Enterprise server.
  • Understand the DB2 architecture
  • Install the DB2 server software
  • Configure the DB2 server
  • Start and stop the DB2 server
Module 2 - Basic DB2 Administration
Domino administrators using the NSFDB2 feature will need to know the basics of administering a DB2 server. This module covers how to install the DB2 Administration Client and how to use selected DB2 administration tools, as well as the basics of DB2 security and backing up DB2 databases.
  • Install the DB2 Administration Client on an administrator's machine
  • Use the Control Center, Command Window, Command Line Processor, and Command Editor tools to administer DB2
  • Explore the basics of how to configure a DB2 system
  • Learn how DB2 security works
  • Back up and recover DB2 databases
Module 3 - Configuring Domino and DB2
There are several tasks that administrators must complete to allow Domino to store databases in DB2. This module covers how to install and configure the Domino server, how to enable the NSFDB2 feature, and how Domino data is translated and stored in DB2.
  • Install the Domino server that will be integrated with DB2
  • Configure DB2 security for Domino integration
  • Install the DB2 Runtime Client on the Domino server
  • Enable Domino Transaction Logging
  • Configure the Domino server to store databases in DB2
  • Manage Domino databases stored in DB2
Module 4 - Domino and DB2 for Application Developers
Storing Domino databases in DB2 allows developers to use two new design elements: DB2 Access Views and Query Views. DB2 Access Views allow DB2 applications to access Domino data using SQL. Query views allow one view in Domino (which uses a SQL Query) to display data from its Domino database, from other Domino databases, and from other DB2 databases. The first lesson in this module shows how to install and configure the Domino DB2 Access Server to support the use of DB2 Access Views and Query Views. The remainder of this lessons show how to create and use DB2 Access Views and Query Views.
  • Install and configure the Domino DB2 Access Server on the DB2 server
  • Map Domino users to DB2 users
  • Understand the purpose of DB2 Access Views
  • Create DB2 Access Views
  • Learn the advantages of Query Views
  • Create Query Views
  • Configure federated data to allow access to other DB2 databases
  • Create a Query View that includes federated data
